Maya Weug fought back at the last opportunity to secure her third victory of the 2025 campaign, keeping her title dreams alive in tough conditions and a remarkable challenge from second-placed Doriane Pin in Singapore.
After initially losing out to Pin, Weug made all the right calls to take the win on the final lap of the rain-soaked Race 2, with McLaren’s Ella Lloyd coming home in third place.
At lights out, it was Pin who got the better launch over the polesitter, allowing the Mercedes driver to surge alongside ahead of Turn 1. Weug found herself unable to cut across to defend her lead and, despite a lock-up, Pin kept her car cleanly on track and snatched first place.
The battle for P3 was just as intense on the opening lap as Chloe Chambers, Lloyd and Emma Felbermayr went three-wide before the McLaren-backed racer came out on top, determined to bounce back after a time penalty in Race 1 demoted her from fourth to seventh.
It was a different story for yesterday’s maiden winner Lia Block, who dropped behind Alpine’s Nina Gademan before tapping the barrier, relegating her to last place on track by Lap 4.
Elsewhere, Red Bull Racing driver Alisha Palmowski was on the charge after enduring some frustrating sessions in Singapore – she hit the wall in both Qualifying and Race 1, leaving her to start Race 2 in P18.
She had gained a handful of places before a snap of oversteer forced her onto the run-off area, dropping her back down to 14th place. However, she quickly recovered and had returned to the tail end of the points by Lap 9.
With six laps remaining, the threat of rain became a reality and spray was thrown up around the circuit. Campos Racing was the first team to switch to wet tyres as they called Palmowski in, hoping that they would gain an advantage if the weather continued to worsen.
Staying on slicks, Chambers attempted to reclaim third place from Lloyd but rattled wide over the kerbs. In a sudden turn of events, Nicole Havrda crashed out in the tricky conditions and the Safety Car was called, allowing more drivers to pit without losing as much time.
But race leaders Pin and Weug stayed out – the former was called into the pits belatedly at the last corner, giving her no choice but to deal with the damp track.
In the final stages of the race, the Safety Car period ended with the grid on an odd mix of slick and wet tyres, but Pin controlled the restart well to maintain her lead. However, Weug launched a mighty challenge to pass her rival for P1, keeping herself firmly in the title fight as she took victory on the last lap.
Lloyd confidently held onto the final podium spot ahead of Felbermayr, with Alba Larsen taking fifth place. Gademan and Chloe Chong were sixth and seventh respectively, just in front of Joanne Ciconte and Racing Bulls’ Rafaela Ferreira. Taking her first point of the season, Courtney Crone rounded out the top 10.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The 2025 F1 ACADEMY season will come to a thrilling close in Las Vegas from 20-22 November, with plenty left to fight for with only nine points separating Pin and Weug in the Drivers' Standings.
